Champika Fernando is a Product Manager on Google's Kids & Families Team where she designs and builds tools to support kids as creators with technology. As the daughter of immigrants, she grew up in a culturally rich and diverse community that shaped her values. She’s passionate about community, creativity, self-expression and the role that technology plays in supporting them. As a shy teenager Champika learned to code as a means of creating and sharing art. She later received a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Toronto and a Masters of Media Arts and Sciences from the MIT Media Lab. She helped to design and build the Scratch Online Community - where kids from around the world create, share, and discuss personally meaningful multi-media projects.
